Eleanor Roosevelt reshaped the role of First Lady from ceremonial to consequential; transforming it into a platform for leadership, advocacy, and change.
She held press conferences exclusively for women reporters, opening doors for journalists who had long been excluded. She wrote My Day every single day for 26 years, giving voice to policy, justice, and women’s perspectives. She spoke boldly on civil rights, labor reforms, and global human rights, proving that influence carries its greatest weight when it is used in service of others.
Through her ambition and actions, she expanded women’s visibility in public life and modeled what it meant to lead at the highest levels.
Because of her, women today step into leadership with greater access, credibility, and authority. The path she widened is one we now walk, and extend for the next generation.
We can honor her legacy by using our own platforms (big or small) to champion equity, expand opportunities, and strengthen the influence of women and those too often left at the margins.
“Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you’ll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt
